Gesture drawing can take the fear out of drawing because it is not meant to be a precise and exact representation of the object. It is simply a way of capturing the essence of a scene.
Gesture drawing can be used to capturethe movement of the subject quickly before the moment is gone.
The subjects should be drawn as simply as possible. Avoid any details. Lay down quickly drawn lines to create form.
Imagine you are describing an object with your hands as you talk to someone - those hand gestures are very like those you make when gesture drawing. The marks are quick and deliberate. You look at the subject and try to sum it up with a few marks, as you might describe it in a few words. Because you don't have much time, each word - each mark - in a gesture drawing must say something significant about the subject.
More Angular IT’S UP TO YOU! But also think about the subject matter and the emotion or expression that you the artist are trying to demonstrate… More Curvy
Draw both heavy and light lines. The heaviest lines indicate areas of visual weight or importance.
Gesture drawings are quick sketches that capture the essence of an object. They are great for practice and warm up prior to a serious drawing.
Sometimes the drawings are so loose that you may not recognize the object. But the form is still strong.
