Zimbabwe • Population: 13,771,721 • Birth Rate: 32.47/1,000 • Death Rate: 10.62/1,000 • GDP: $10.81billion
Issue: Maternal Health • 95:100 Male:Female • Mother’s mean age: 20.5 • Physician density: 0.06 physicians/1,000 populations • Maternal mortality exceeds 960 per 100,000 live births • 3,000 mothers die giving birth each year
Issue: HIV/AIDS • 1.17 million living with AIDS • 52% women • 13% children • Sexual transmission is main cause of spread; mother-to-child is second • 20% of under 5 mortality is caused by HIV/AIDS • indicates high levels of virus in mothers
Issue: Weak Healthcare System • 2008 economic crisis drained Zimbabwe’s healthcare system of medical professionals • Lower wages forced them to leave to look for better work • brain drain • rural to urban (human capital) flight • Many hospitals/healthcare centers closed, especially in cities • Rural communities do not have proper infrastructure or personnel for quality maternal and child healthcare
Solution: Health Transition Fund • $435 million pledged by UNICEF, EU, and other donors between 2011 and 2015 • Goals reduce maternal mortality by 70% and child mortality (under 5) by 36% • Increase number of doctors and nurses • Increase in critical medical stock
Solution: Government and Education Policy • Subsidize hospital patient fees for mothers and their children to increase access • Increase education and training for childbirth to increase safe deliveries, mother and child survival • midwife training program
