AP Biology Workshop New AP Teachers Rob Hamilton-consultant
Teacher Qualification • Time • Dedication • Flexibility • Summer Training Sessions Help • Choose a session where they will cover all 12 of the recommended labs
Time Demands • Generation of New Materials • Creation of Concept Models • Laboratory Preparation • Grading • Training • Budgeting/Purchasing
Assistance for Teacher • Two Preparation Periods • Fewer Preparations • Adequate Budget • Patient Administration
Student Selection • Semester A in Biology I • Letter to Prospective Students (Invitation to AP Awareness Night) • AP Awareness Meeting with Parents (Video: Pathway to Success) • “Walk Ons” • One on One Discussions
Time Required to Teach AP Effectively • Double Period • Avoid Block 8 or Block 4 • O Period • After School Time • Saturdays • Be Innovative
Curriculum Organization • Use the Acorn Book • Cover Entire Curriculum • Use the Lab Manual • Use Past Essay Questions
AP Biology Textbooks (Any College Text) • Biology by Campbell, Reece & Mitchell 5th. Addison Wesley 1-800-950-2665 • Biological Sciences. Keeton and Gould 6th. W.W. Norton 1-800-223-2584 • Biology. Raven & Johnson. McGraw-Hill. 1-800-262-4729 • Biology by Solomon & Biology by Arms and Camp. Saunders Publishing. 1-800-237-2665 • Biology by Starr & Taggart. Wadsworth 1-800-876-2350
Advice on Labs 1-3 • Make diagrams/take pictures of Lab Stations • Attend a Summer Session • Lab 1: Reduce length of Dialysis Tubing, tie with dental floss, prep students with water potential handouts • Lab 2: Skip 360 second trial. Increase Catalase solution to 1000 units. Do trials one at a time. • Lab 3: Have students view Sordaria slides but get ideal data from handout
Labs 4-8 • Lab 4: Have students practice using spec 20 by preparing an action spectrum. Incubate all the tubes together • Lab 5: Use corn that has been germinating 48-72 hours • Lab 6: Too Much to Discuss Here. Get DNA Science • Lab 7: Use carbon dioxide tank to put flies out. Use handout to discuss Chi Square • Lab 8: Prep students with many Hardy-Weinburg problems. Use squirrel sheet to differentiate between gene and genotypic frequencies. Use Data Tables that allow students to calculate P & q each generation
Labs 9-12 • Lab 9: Use Plant with a woody stem • Lab 10: Use automated blood cuffs. Use pencil tap method for determining heart rate of Daphnia • Lab 11: Use different Choice Chambers • Lab 12: Use Ankistrodesmus and Algae grow. Turn aquarium into dark bottle for minimum of 48 hours. Use corrected nomograph
Preparing for the Objective Portion of the AP Examination • Collect Several Test Banks • Find a Study Guide with Plenty of Multiple Choice • Model Your Tests After the AP Examination
Preparing for the Essay Portion of the AP Examination • Give student the opportunity to write • Feed students a steady diet of past essays • Use grading standards from past tests • Make sure students know how to design a controlled experiment • Make sure students can answer questions from Acorn book
Teaching Strategies • No lecturing • Use prepared notes • Create conceptually rich models, videos and simulations • Avoid “factoidal spew” • Do all Labs
