REAP The New Reading/Writing Strategy that’s Sweeping the Nation!
What is it? REAP is a strategy that we are going to use this semester to edit our research papers. This strategy is going to help us not only to better understand what we are reading, but it will also show us to thoroughly and meaningfully respond to what we are reading!
What does it mean? REAP is an acronym that stands for the following: R= Read E= Encode A= Analyze P=Ponder
R is for READ • Read and understand the author’s ideas: • You might need to re-read something in order to understand it! • Make sure you are aware of what questions you still have after reading. • It might be a good idea to annotate (take notes on) what you are reading.
E is for ENCODE • Encode means to convert or translate into your own words. To break the text down to a language that you understand: • Do you know what the author is saying/arguing? • What is the main idea? • What have you learned?
A is for ANALYZE • Analyze and dig deeper into what you have read: • Why do you think the author wrote this? • What is his or her opinion on the subject? • What could be improved or changed to make this better? • Can you connect this to another text, or use any other reading strategies?
P is for PONDER • Ponder what YOU have written down so far: • Did you include all the important ideas? • Are you being thorough and specific? • Do you need to add anything? • Does it make sense and flow naturally?
Let’s Try it TOGETHER! • Number 5’s pass out a REAP worksheet for each person at your table. • Everyone take out your 1st drafts • Exchange with a neighbor and begin editing • In addition to filling out the worksheet please make corrections on the paper itself.
