  3. Originally named Misión San Antonio de Valero, the Alamo served as home to missionaries and their Native American converts for nearly seventy years.

  4. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was born in Mexico on February 21 1794. Antonio Lopez deSanta Anna(1794-1876)

  5. Antonio Lopez deSanta Anna(1794-1876) In 1833, he was elevated to president of Mexico in a democratic election. He soon determined, however, that Mexico was not ready for democracy and pronounced himself dictator.

  6. William Barret Travis(1809-1836) He was a lawyer by profession. At the age of 26, he led the Texas force at the Alamo after James Bowie became too ill to command.

  7. David "Davy" Crockett(1786-1836) Davy Crockett was a pioneer, patriot, soldier, trapper, explorer, State Legislator, and Congressman.In Texas, however, he will always be remembered as a heroic participant in The Battle of the Alamo

  8. James Bowie(1796-1836) Known for his famous "Bowie knife" and a sometimes reckless adventurer, Jim Bowie is now immortalized as one of the true folk heroes in early Texas.

  9. The Battle of the Alamo February 24, 1836 – March 6, 1836 Provisions were low, ammunition was scarce, and help was nowhere in sight for the 189 Texans barricaded inside the Alamo. During the twelve day siege the gallant Americans reinforced the walls, dug trenches, and prepared for the battle to come.
