What is the impact when library staffs are paid low salaries? • High staff turnover • Board spends their energy on constantly filling library director position • Library can't move forward when the director changes frequently • Inconsistent customer service • Low staff morale (Employees treat customers the way they are treated)

  4. How does the community benefit by improving library salaries? • Customers are served consistently by knowledgeable and experienced staff who are familiar with library resources • Keep good staff • Attract qualified staff • Improve morale • Board more likely to focus on the future

  5. Where Do We Start? • Our own attitudes. Do we truly believe we should be compensated fairly and are we willing to make it a priority?

  6. Steps • Request time on a board meeting agenda to discuss salaries. (Consider budget calendar. Allow enough time to prepare.) • Prepare your case • Present your case to the board. Is the board willing to make this a priority? • Will the board re-allocate funds or will you need to request additional funding? • Discuss strategy with the board on how to make the case with the city.
