Partners • Coordinating Partner - DANTE • MED Partner countries/beneficiaries: • Algeria, Cyprus, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Malta, Morocco, Palestinian Authority, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey • EU partners: • National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) of France, Greece, Italy and Spain • Funded up to 10 M EURO/80% by European Commission – DG EuropeAid EUMEDIS programme • Remaining funding from beneficiaries. • Project started 2002
Project Phases • Phase 1 : Feasability studies Prepare the technical, commercial and organisational groundwork • Phase 2 : Realisation actions • Phase 2A : activities to source the infrastructure and services to build the EUMEDCONNECT network (call for tenders) • Phase 2B : activities to implement and operate EUMEDCONNECT network
EUMEDCONNECT Achievements • 11/12 of MED-NRENs are now being connected • Stimulating national network development – e.g. ARN in Algeria, MARWAN in Morocco • Opportunities for international collaborative research • Training for partners’ engineers • First African R&E network !
EUMEDCONNECT Achievements • This has involved major streams of work to : • procure the network • lobby for political support • plan the network • put in place operational management of the network • Currently contracted to June 2006 • Extension to mid 2007 recently agreed with the EC
