  2. Literary Terms • 10. Voice – the personality of the storyteller • 11. Theme – the central message, concern, or purpose in a literary work. The theme is the writer’s central idea. • 12. Stanza – A group of lines within a poem. A stanza is like a paragraph in a work of prose • 13. Metaphor – A comparison between two unlike objects in which one thing is said to be another • 14. Imagery – Words and phrases that appeal to the readers’ five senses. Imagery helps readers imagine how things look, feel, smell, sound, and taste.

  3. Poem • After reading “Identity”, think about some of the literary elements we just discussed. Use the Cornell note taking method to outline the main ideas for the poem. • Key points: • Theme • Speaker/Voice • Metaphor • Stanzas • Imagery

  4. Response to Literature • Do you most closely resemble a “flower” or a “weed” according to Polanco’s definition? Explain your answer.

Metaphor – A comparison between two unlike objects in which one thing is said to be another • 14. Imagery – Words and phrases that appeal to the readers’ five senses. Imagery helps readers imagine how things look, feel, smell, sound, and taste. • 15. Conflict – A struggle between opposing forces • External conflict – a character struggles against some outside force, such as another person or nature • Internal Conflict – a struggle that takes place within the mind of a character. The character struggles to make a decision, take action, or overcome a feeling.

  6. Chapters 6-7 • After reading Chapters 6-7, think about some of the literary elements we just discussed. Use the Cornell note taking method to outline the main ideas for the chapter. • Key points: • Character/Relationships • Main plot developments • Author’s purpose/style • Theme • Conflict
