Some Boring Stuff • Vanderbilt was founded as a center for Southern Methodism. • The General Conference (of Methodist Bishops) drew up the original charter based on its northeastern counterparts. • Bishop Holland McTyeire seduced Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt to donate the money needed (500,000) for the grounds and buildings in 1872.
Not so rich… • MTSU is created by the General Education Bill of 1909 • Started as a two year teacher training facility. • Murfreesboro was chosen because of its centrality • Granted first Bachelor of Science in 1925 • Today MTSU has five hundred acres, and still no parking for students
Medical Complex • Vanderbilt can attribute much of its success to the Medical Center • 2nd Largest Private Employer in the State • They are still a “wanna be” ivy league school
TND • The Neighborhood around Vandy is for the most part traditional • Promotes walking and biking • Sells itself • Successful new development
Sprawl • Murfreesboro witnesses sprawl • Does not promote walking and biking • Attracts in state students only • UGLY!
Prestige • Who really knows who MTSU is? • Who really knows who Vanderbilt is? • Is Vandy a part of the “Southern Ivy League” • It is better than Rhodes! Hahaha
New Development • Around Vandy • Borders Complex • East – West End • Attractive • Around MTSU • Ole South Properties • Wal Mart • Once Again - Ugly
Commuters Forever! • MTSU will forever be the commuter school of choice, be loud, be proud • Vanderbilt is able to retain student for post graduate work • Future of RIM
Conclusion • Well, there isn’t much of a conclusion • I am graduating • If Dr. Eff Passes me for this presentation • Reminder: I did create the new Random Sample of Three…where is the love • Really though… • What caliber of student can MTSU really expect to attract?
