  2. Today’s Goal • Identify and explain the role of women during the Revolutionary time period.

  3. The Woman’s Role • For the majority of women, life was centered on the home. • Men remained the head of household, with women playing a supporting role. • Cooked, cleaned, sewed, cared for children • Women had few legal rights

  4. During and After the War • The ideals of liberty and equality did not come to fully include women. During the Revolutionary War, women voiced their political opinions freely and were considered part of the Revolutionary effort. • After the war, however, women’s lives were still primarily centered on the home and their role in society was still limited.

  6. Phillis Wheatley • Born in Senegal, Africa • Seven years old when taken from Africa to Boston as a slave • Wrote her first poem at age 13 • Her book of poems was the first book to ever be published in the colonies by an African American • Tried to show through her poems that all men are equal and that slavery should be abolished.
