At a Glance … • You will be choosing a topic for your science fair project. • Once your topic is approved, you will carry out your experiment by following the steps of the Scientific Method (the same way scientists do in the “real world”). • Once you have carried out the experiment and gathered your data, you will organize it on a large display board. • We will give you time in class to work on it, but the majority of this project will be done at home. • The final project is DUE on May 21st (Wednesday), and will be showcased during Open House.
Choosing a Topic … • This is the hardest part! • Let’s discuss some ideas …
Biology • Animals • Study the behavior of one of your own pets! • Do dogs have a preference when eating from different colored bowls? • Plants • Can a plant survive on orange juice rather than water? • How well do plants grow under artificial light? • Bacteria • What areas of your house contain the most germs?
Chemistry • Fun Experiments • What ratio of baking soda to vinegar produces the best erupting volcano? • Test the pH of some household chemicals • Chemicals in Body Products • What lotions produce the smoothest skin? • Do some perfumes / colognes contain harmful chemicals?
Physics • Come up with an invention to solve a problem! • Design an invention to do one of your daily chores. • What kinds of materials work best as parachutes? • What three-dimensional shapes are the strongest? • How could you best protect an egg from a 10-foot drop?
Other Ideas • Human Body / Behavior • Do wounds heal faster with / without band-aids? • Male vs. Female • Sports • Does the rotation of a basketball after a shot is taken, improve its chances of going through the hoop? • How does the string tension in a tennis racket affect how the ball is struck? • Food • Do different brands of popcorn produce more popcorn? • What is the best way to preserve fresh herbs?
Other Miscellaneous Things … • This is an individual assignment (no groups). • Do NOT spend a lot of money on materials. • Your science fair project will be graded (worth 1/3 of your trimester 3 science grade) • You will have 9 weeks total to work on this. Please do NOT wait until the last minute! • Any other questions?
Important Dates • March 19 (Wednesday): • Introduce Science Fair Projects • Hand out Topics Sheet • March 25 (Tuesday): • Topics Sheet DUE • March 26 (Wednesday): • Topics Sheet Returned • Hand out Contract Sheet • April 9 (Wednesday): • Contract Sheet (signed) DUE • May 21 (Wednesday): • Final Project DUE
Let’s watch a video … http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7g723Rhuyk
Let’s look at an example … • Randomly choose A / B / C • Notice how the example has ALL 7 parts of the Scientific Method • What other things about this example might you want to remember when doing your own project?
