Content • Intro classes USRA had an impact on • Samples (field trip, workshops, projects) • Outreach • 3D video • Interactive google map • Tutorials • Publications
Education • Intro to Digital Photography • Students learn about cameras, photo techniques and editing • technology first developed through NASA (Remote Sensing) • part of this class was a lesson about aerial photography • i.e. Google Earth • Intro to GIS • Students learn ArcView • Apply their knowledge in a final project • Applications of GIS/GPS • GPS • Google Earth • internet mapping • 3D video animation Introduction to GIS Applications of GIS/GPS Digital Photography And other classes, i.e. hydrology
Outreach - AIHEC • AIHEC attendees learned: • Applications of GIS/GPS • Basic GPS usage Other outreach: • Tribal organizations • SD Farm and Ranch Day • Pioneer and Indians conference • SD Tourism conference GPS treasure hunt
Outreach: Pine Ridge Chamber of Commerce • Pine Ridge Chamber of Commerce • Online map • MOU about mapping historical sites and business sites • K-12 (hikes, youth camps) • Tribal Historical Preservation Office • OST Land use office (interns) • OSPRA (GIS support) • Other Colleges/Universities (Sinte, Salish Kootenai)
Medicine Wheels – Google Earth and the bombing range Jesse Shortbull
Lakota Cosmology Use of Landsat TM data (from SDGIS) And traditional Lakota star knowledge
Field trip: Wounded Knee- Russell Means • Students from GIS and Photography class • Students learned: • First hand account from 1973 Wounded Knee Siege • GPS locations around Wounded Knee • Hyperlinked to pictures

Tutorials http://space.hsv.usra.edu/TRESTE/mannel.html GPS Download data and create a map 3D video creation Google Earth Teaching Box Activities (Mannel and Tilgner 2007) How to Use a Handheld GPS DeviseStudents will be introduced to handheld GPS units and their use. A completion exercise is included to familiarize students with their GPS unit. GIS on the InternetStudents will explore different GIS applications on the internet including locating local wildfires, exploring public lands, planning a trip, finding an address, and geocaching. Introduction to Google EarthStudents will install the free software called Google Earth and create a virtual flyover. GIS, GPS and Data DownloadA tutorial on using ArcGIS to create a map. Students will be guided on how to download an aerial photo, create a map, and overlay GPS points. This tutorial is a little more advanced than the other three, partly, because it combines several aspects of GIS. GIS allows the user to make maps on the computer and to analyze them. The majority of GIS users work with ArcGIS mapping software by ESRI. GPS points are locations that are often displayed on maps.
Publications • SD Academy of Science (4 students) • 4 students • Presentations and proceedings • AGU (American Geophysical Union) • 2 Students in San Francisco (over 10,000 attendees) • International Journal of Remote Sensing • Journal of Geoscience Education (currently in review) • And others
