  1. Latitude and Longitude Reinforcement/ Battleship Prep Work!

  2. Remember… • Last week we learned about Hemispheres, Latitude, and Longitude… • Let me refresh your memory!

  3. Hemispheres all together…

  4. Location: What is the Latitude? • Lines that run from eastto west and never end • Think… “Lat is flat” and Changes in latitude, changes in attitude… • Like a ladder… think “laTTer” • Always an equal distance apart • The Equator is a very important line of latitude- it divides the Northern and Southern hemispheres. • Lines of latitude are also called parallels. http://facweb.bhc.edu/academics/science/harwoodr/Geog101/study/images/Lat.gif

  5. Location: What is the Longitude? • Lines from North Pole to South Pole • Also called meridians • The Prime Meridianis a very important line of Longitude and divides the Western and Eastern Hemisphere. http://staff.harrisonburg.k12.va.us/~cwalton/geopics/longitude.JPG

  6. Prime Meridian up close…

  7. Identify which is Latitude and which is Longitude and then label the Equator and the Prime Meridian • Latitude Longitude • Equator Prime Meridian • http://www.geographyalltheway.com/ks3_geography/maps_atlases/longitude_latitude.htm

  8. Now, we’re going to put all of that knowledge to work! • Tomorrow is a very important day for humanity… it is up to you to save the world from Alien Invasion! • In order to save the world, you’ve absolutely GOT to know your latitude and longitude. • Today we are going to do a variety of activities to make sure you are ready!

  9. First… • Using the giant paper circles, we are going to plot out… • NORTH, SOUTH, EAST, AND WEST • Using one of the WHITE strings, plot the Equator • Using one of the RED strings, plot the Prime Meridian • Now, plot two more lines of LATITUDE with the WHITE string • And two more lines of Longitude with the RED string (remember where are lines of Longitude start and stop) • Last, place the Continents and Oceans in their relative locations. • Make sure I check your map before you undo it!

  10. We know that this is latitude, but there is a bit more to it than that… • Latitude and Longitude are measured by what we call “degrees” • The Equator is 0 degrees Latitude. These blue dots are all on 0 degrees latitude • Place a couple of your beads on the 0 degrees latitude on your map.

  11. We know that this is latitude, but there is a bit more to it than that… • All lines of Latitude ABOVE the Equator are referred to as Northern Latitudes • Every red dot on this map is on “Latitude 30 degrees North” • Place a couple of your beads on the 30 degrees north latitude on your map.

  12. We know that this is latitude, but there is a bit more to it than that… • All lines of Latitude BELOW the Equator are referred to as Southern Latitudes • Now, place some beads on Latitude 60 degrees South… • It should look like this…

  13. Now, what about longitude? • The Prime Meridian is 0 degrees Longitude • Place some of your beads on 0 degrees Longitude

  14. Longitude… • All lines of Longitude EAST of the Prime Meridian are referred to as Eastern Longitudes • Every orange dot on this map is on “Longitude 90 degrees EAST” • Place a couple of your beads on “Longitude 90 degrees EAST” on your map.

  15. Longitude… • All lines of Longitude WEST of the Prime Meridian are referred to as WESTERN Longitudes • Place a couple of your beads on “Longitude 120 degrees WEST” on your map. • It should look like this…

  16. Putting it all together • To save the world tomorrow, you are going to have to be able to plot latitude and longitude coordinates together… • Latitude always comes first… • This is 0 degrees Latitude and 0 degrees Longitude

  17. Putting it all together • Now let’s plot Latitude 30 degrees NORTH and Longitude 90 degrees WEST… • What will that look like? Plot it on your map

  18. Putting it all together • Now let’s plot Latitude 60 degrees SOUTH and Longitude 180 degrees EAST… • What will that look like? Plot it on your map

  19. Are we getting the hang of it? • Plot the following… • Latitude 90 degrees NORTH, Longitude 60 degrees EAST • Latitude 0 degrees, Longitude 90 degrees WEST • Latitude 30 degrees SOUTH, Longitude 120 degrees EAST

  20. Practice a bit more • Take turns in your group calling out coordinates and plotting them. • One person call a coordinate, someone else place a bead there. • Then, someone else call out a coordinate and someone else place a bead there… • Everyone needs to participate. • If someone isn’t getting the hang of it, help them out by trying to explain it to them, don’t just give the answer away.

  21. Last Thing… • Now you are each going to get a small slip of paper. • Write your name on it… • DO NOT LOOK AT YOUR GROUP’S PAPERS! • On your own, plot the coordinates and then hand it to me on your way out the door. • Also, be prepared tomorrow to save the world! We are all depending on you!

  22. One more thing… (if time) • AS A GROUP, Use the BOLD terms to label latitudes and longitudes on the paper world map. • I’ve done the first one for you!

  23. Let’s Check your Work…
