Computer Science and Digital Literacy – NYSED Updates • Spring 2017 – Digital Literacy Survey • April 2018 – December 2019 deadline for Computer Science Standards • May 2018 – Ed Tech Advisory committee recommendations for digital literacy • October 2018 – April 2019 – Standards Writing • Spring 2019 – Standards Review/Public Comment • Fall 2019 – New Standards Adopted by BOR Questions currently being explored: • Digital literacy and computer science – separate disciplines or two strands of the same discipline? • Knowledge and skills for ALL students vs those who plan to work in computer science
Standards and Curriculum Revision Updates: • Physical Education Learning Standards Review • Spring 2018 – formed State review team, set goals and objectives • Summer 2018 – Initial meetings • Fall 2018 – ongoing work – review and revision of the K-12 Standards • Winter/Spring 2019 – Drafting new Standards documents for public review and comment • Summer/Fall 2019 – Public comment window • Fall 2019/Winter 2020 – Final draft for BOR approval/Statewide public comment • Winter/Spring 2020 – Seek BOR approval after comment phase • Spring/Summer 2020 – Initial guidance and beginning of PD for rollout
Physical Education continued… Current status: • Work group has accepted first 5 Standards from the National Standards from the Society of Health and Physical Education (SHAPE) • Physical Literacy – motor skills and movement patterns • Knowledge of concepts and principals related to movement and performance • Knowledge and skills needed to maintain acceptable level of PA and fitness • Responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others • Recognition of the value and benefits of PA Two additional standards may be included: Acquisition of resources to achieve and maintain physical, social, and emotional wellness Informed consumers with knowledge and skills for careers in PE, health and wellness
The Arts • New Standards September 2017 • Early 2018 – turnkey training • The 2018-2019 School Year • Professional Development continues, with focus on curriculum • NYSED publishes discipline-based PD materials • Intensive assessment development, including performance-based portfolios, collections of student work over time, etc. • NFCSD • September 13 – Standards Overview for all Staff – J. Next Generation ELA and Math Standards • September 2017: Adoption of NYS Next Generation Learning Standards. • Phase I: Raise Awareness (Winter 2018-Winter/Spring 2019): Professional development on NYS Next Generation Learning Standards; two-day assessments measuring the 2011 P-12 Learning Standards. • Phase II: Build Capacity (Spring 2019-Summer 2020): Professional development continuing on NYS Next Generation Learning Standards; two-day assessments measuring the 2011 P-12 Learning Standards. • Phase III Full Implementation (September 2020 – ongoing): Full implementation of the NYS Next Generation Learning Standards. • Spring 2021: New grade 3-8 tests measuring the NYS Next Generation Learning Standards. The timeline regarding the full-implementation/assessment alignment at the high-school level has not yet been determined and will be forthcoming; however, full-implementation/assessment alignment will not be before the school year 2020-2021.

CTE – Career and Technical Education – Release of the Middle Level CTE Modules • The Office of Career and Technical Education (CTE) released the theme and content modules for Middle Level CTE in mid-October. The module project was been a yearlong endeavor led by the CTE-TAC in collaboration with the NYSED and the professional organizations for Agriculture Education, Business Education, Family and Consumer Science Education, Health Sciences Education, Technology Education and Trade and Technical Education. The module resources will assist schools in crafting meaningful learning experiences in CTE middle grades students Family Consumer Science and Technology. • A statewide team of practitioners representing all six CTE content areas prepared 2 types of modules: Theme Modules and Content Modules. Theme modules are foundational, cross-content, and standards-based. They represent the basis for middle-level CTE knowledge and skills that will benefit all students as they move to high school, regardless of the pathway they choose. Content Modules supply context for the Themes. They are specific to each CTE content area, standards-based, connect middle-level to high school, and are designed for instruction by teachers certified for that content. • NFCSD – SU 2018 – Reworked one unit per CTE course with a STEM focus • Spring 2019 – Curriculum Revision Committee begins task of reviewing NYSED resources, comparable locally available programming, community partnerships and a framework aligned with the Superintendent’s vision for Vocational Education • Summer 2019 – Curriculum revision for grade 7 FCS and grade 8 Technology
