The year 1 phonics screen will be taken by all individuals in year 1 in June 2012
What is the phonics Screen? It is designed to give teachers and parents information on how your child is progressing in phonics. It will help to identify whether your child needs additional support at this stage so that they do not fall behind in this vital early reading skill.
What will it look like? • There will be two sections that get progressively more difficult. • There will be 40 words in the screen and it will assess phonics skills and knowledge learned through Reception and Year 1. • Although we don’t know the score required to reach the expectations we do know that it will be more than 30 out of 40. • Your child will read up to four words per page and they will probably do the check in one sitting of about 5-10 minutes.
What will it be like for your child? The children are used to sitting with their class teacher in a one to one situation every six weeks so that their phonics skills can be assessed. Therefore this assessment will be very familiar to them.
What will it check? It will check that your child can: • Sound out and blend graphemes in order to read simple words. • Read phonically decodable one-syllable and two-syllable words, • e.g. cat, sand, dentist. • Read a selection of nonsense words which are referred to as • pseudo words. Children will know these as ‘Alien Words’.
What are Pseudo/Alien Words? These are words that are phonically decodable but are not actual words with an associated meaning e.g. brip, snorb. Pseudo words are included in the check specifically to assess whether your child can decode a word using phonics skills and not their memory.
After the Screening … • The check is not about passing or failing but checking appropriate progress is being made. • If children do not reach the required standard, then we will discuss plans and offer additional, tailored support to ensure that your child can catch up. Children progress at different speeds so not reaching the threshold score does not necessarily mean there is a serious problem. • Your child will re-sit the check the following summer term in year 2 if they have not reached the required standard.
What Happens to the Results? • We will report the results to you at the end of the Summer term with your child’s report. • The results are also given the Local Authority.
What can you do to help your child? • Read with your child at home and encourage them to sound out any unfamiliar sounds and blend them together. • Talk about the meaning if your child does not understand the word. • Use the handout provided to support your child with sounds they still need to work on. • Be positive and give lots of praise and encouragement.
