Tr.Rez@SB2014 Formation Of Interstitial Fluid • Interstitial fluid/ tissue fluid • Colorless liquid that filled the spaces between the cells • The composition of tissue fluid is similar to plasma, but without proteins (which remain in blood capillaries)
Tr.Rez@SB2014 Structure of the Lymphatic System • Lymphatic system : • a network of lymph vessels running alongside the vein • Lymph : • Found in lymph vessels • Composition : similar to tissue fluid but with more fats. WHY?
Tr.Rez@SB2014 Structure of the Lymphatic System • Main structures of lymphatic system: • Lymphatic capillaries • Lymphatic vessels • Lymph node • Spleen • Lymphatic ducts
Tr.Rez@SB2014 Group of lymph nodes
Tr.Rez@SB2014 Movement of lymph within the lymphatic system: Lymphatic capillaries Lymphatic vessels Lymph nodes Lymphatic vessels Heart Superior vena cava Right subclavian vein Right lymphatic duct Left subclavian vein Left lymphatic duct The drainage of lymph from the lymphatic system back into the circulatory system
Tr.Rez@SB2014 • Lymph is moved along the lymph vessels in the following ways: • Hydrostatic pressure of the interstitial fluid leaving the blood capillaries pushes the lymph along the lymphatic capillaries • Lymph is squeezed along the lymphatic vessels as the surrounding skeletal muscles contract during movement • Valves • Inhalation
Tr.Rez@SB2014 The functions of the Lymphatic System
Tr.Rez@SB2014 Oedema • The increase of interstitial fluid that causes the organs & tissues of the body to swell up • Caused by: • An increase in the capillary blood pressure forcing an excess fluid leakage into the interstitial spaces • A blockage of the lymphatic vessels which slows down the drainage of excess interstitial fluid
Tr.Rez@SB2014 Elephantiasis • Disease caused by the blockage of the body’s lymphatic system by certain parasitic rounds worms leading to oedema
