Why is it important? It is important to find main ideas when reading. Main ideas help readers remember important information. It is the most important piece of information the author wants you to know.
How can I find the main idea? In a passage, article or story, look for clues that can help you find the main idea.
Where can I find clues When looking for clues, first look at the title. Then look at the first sentence in a paragraph. This is called the topic sentence and tells you what the other sentences will be about.
For example If you are reading Charlotte's Web, and your friend says to you, “What is that book all about?” They are asking you for the main idea, which is friendship.
What are the other sentences called? The other sentences are called details. They support and explain the main idea. They are what make the story interesting to read.
