2011 IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF AMUNDSEN
In the Footsteps of Amundsen ”100 days to go” Bancroft Arnesen Explore is inviting children and young people from around the world on an expedition that is sure to leave a mark and show that dreams really can come true.
In the Footsteps of Amundsen • The expedition is led by women from around the globe, all of whom share a common goal: to reach the South Pole together. • The most important teachings the women will receive along the way, which they in turn will share with the rest of the world, are: • Dear to Dream • Pathways to Peace • Environmental awareness emphasizing “water”
In the Footsteps of Amundsen • The goal is to inspire 50 million children and young people to take part in a 100-day journey to the South Pole during the 2011-2012 school year: • Virtual involvement and communication: • Participation • Experiences • Challenges • Measures and activities (contests, experiments, measurements, expeditions)
In the Footsteps of Amundsen • Three focal periods for expedition: 1. Pre-expedition: • Preparations (selection, first meeting of women, first training session in Norway) • National and international attention 2. During expedition: • Extreme exotic adventures experienced “LIVE” • Knowledge transfer • National and international attention 3. Post-expedition: • Continued knowledge transfer
In the Footsteps of Amundsen • Pre-expedition: Focus on preparations in Norway and elsewhere in the world: • Norway, a Polar nation, is celebrating this anniversary by sharing its knowledge and putting environmental awareness and conflict resolution on the agenda by means of an inclusive and ‘real-time’ project.
In the Footsteps of Amundsen 2.During expedition: The women’s journey to the South Pole is followed step by step in classrooms around the world: • Captivating and motivational learning in the virtual world and through organised activities and experiences. • Contests are held and selected children and young people from across the world meet the expedition at the South Pole together with Al Gore/Barack Obama and a Norwegian delegation made up of the Minister of the Environment, Foreign Minister and Crown Prince.
In the Footsteps of Amundsen 3.Post-expedition: Knowledge transfer continues. Environmental awareness and conflict resolution continue to be spotlighted: • BAE continues interactive learning activities across the world in collaboration with, for example, the Foreign Office’s foreign service missions, International Scout Association, CISV and/or other non-political organisations. • Establishing an arena for communicating with children and young people around the world about the selected themes and planning new projects.
