  2. Learning is acquiring new, or modifying existing, knowledge, behaviours, skills, values or preferences and may involve synthesizing different types of information. Learning is not compulsory; it is contextual. Learning may be viewed as a process, rather than a collection of factual and procedural knowledge. Learning is based on experience. (Wikipedia 6-12-12) Teaching is defined “as imparting knowledge to or instruct (someone) as to how to do something; To cause (someone) to learn or understand something by example or experience; To encourage someone to accept (something) as a fact or principle: make (someone) less inclined to do something. (Oxford English Dictionary 6-12-12)

DTA/ELTA The university has been running the DTA since 2001 and it has now been renamed the ELTA (Excellence in Learning and Teaching Award) to align with the University’s emphasis on recognizing excellence across the institution. Enhancements are also to be made to the nominations process and the publicity strategy to increase the numbers of nominations and increase student engagement with the process. An Excellence in Student Support Award will be introduced for non-teaching staff (ESSA).

Raising the profile of excellence Evidence of supporting colleagues and influencing support for student learning; demonstrating impact and engagement beyond one’s immediate academic/professional role Outstanding contributions to colleagues’ professional development in relation to promoting and enhancing student learning Contributing to departmental/college/institutional/national initiatives to facilitate student learning Contributing to and/or supporting meaningful and positive change with respect to pedagogic practice, policy and/or procedure

Developing excellence: Evidence of the nominee’s commitment to his/her ongoing professional development with regard to teaching and learning and/or learning support Ongoing review and enhancement of individual professional practice Engaging in professional development activities which enhance the nominee’s expertise in teaching and learning support Engaging in the review and enhancement of one’s own professional and/or academic practice Specific contributions to significant improvements in the student learning experience

Route 2: Progression Newly introduced progression route using criteria which value teaching attributes within a specified framework from Tutor  Lecturer  Senior Lecturer  Reader/Chair Valuing teachers whether by nomination, self-selection, peer review or selection enhances the student and teacher experience. This institution does so but we can all engage more fully and recognise the impact of our best teachers and the wider beneficial effects they can have. SALT = opportunity, partnership and engagement
