  1. ROCKS

  2. SEDIMENTARY-Sandstone: Árbol de Piedra ("stone tree") is an isolated rock formation in the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve, Bolivia. Known as the "Stone Tree," it is shaped like a stunted tree, and is formed into a thin rock because of strong winds. Árbol de Piedra - Bolivia

  3. SEDIMENTARY: The Bardenas Reales is a semi-desertnatural region, or badlands, of some 100,000 acres in southeast Navarre (Spain). The soils are made up of clay, chalk and sandstoneand have been eroded by water and wind creating surprising shapes, canyons, plateaus, tabular structures and isolated hills, called seamounts. Bárdenas Reales - Navarra - Spain

  4. SEDIMENTARY. Balanced Rock, a Fountain formation, is a combination of coarse sand, gravel, silica and hematite. It is hematite that gives the large balancing rock rock its red hue. Balanced Rock, Garden of the Gods Colorado, USA

  5. SEDIMENTARY: The Moeraki Boulders are unusually large and spherical boulders lying along a stretch of Koekohe Beach on the wave-cut Otago coast of New Zealand. The erosion by wave action of mudstone, comprising local bedrock and landslides, frequently exposes embedded isolated boulders. These boulders are grey-colored septarian concretions, which have been exhumed from the mudstone enclosing them and concentrated on the beach by coastal erosion. Boulders - South Island - New Zealand

  6. SEDIMENTARY: Brimham Rocks are balancing rock formations on Brimham Moor in North Yorkshire, England. The rocks stand at a height of nearly 30 metres in an area owned by the National Trust. There are many variations of rock formations, caused by Millstone Gritbeing eroded by water, glaciation and wind, most of which have achieved amazing shapes. Brimham Rock - England, UK

  7. Sedimentary: Bryce is distinctive due to geological structures called hoodoos, formed by frost weathering and stream erosion of the river and lake bed sedimentary rocks. Bryce Canyon National Park - Utah, USA

  8. SEDIMENTARY: Delicate Arch is formed of Entrada Sandstone.[5] The original sandstone fin was gradually worn away by weathering and erosion, leaving the arch. DelicateArch - Utah, USA

  9. SEDIMENTARY: The raw material for the limestone of the Pinnacles came from seashells in an earlier epoch rich in marine life. These shells were broken down into lime rich sands which were blown inland to form high mobile dunes. Pinnaclesdesert - NambungNational Park - Western Australia

  10. IGNEOUS-Columnar Basalt: Devils Tower is an igneousintrusion in the Black Hills of northeastern Wyoming. It rises dramatically 1,267 feet (386 m) above the surrounding terrain and the summit is 5,114 feet (1,559 m) above sea level. Devils Tower - Wyoming, USA

  11. Igneous: The Black Rock Desert is a semi-arid region (in the Great Basin shrub steppe eco-region), of lava beds and playa, or alkali flats. Fly Geyser is not an entirely natural phenomenon; it was accidentally created by well drilling[3] in 1964 exploring for sources of geothermal energy Geiser Black Rock Desert - Nevada, USA

  12. IGNEOUS-Volcanic: Göreme [ˈɟøɾeme] is located among the "fairy chimney" rock formations in a historical region of Turkey. Goreme Valley Fairy Chimneys - Turkey

  13. SEDIMENTARY. Ko Tapu is a limestone rock about 20 metres (66 ft) tall with the diameter increasing from about 4 metres (13 ft) near the water level to about 8 metres (26 ft) at the top. James Bond Island - Thailand

  14. IGNEOUS. The Devils Marbles are large granitic boulders that form the exposed top layer of an extensive and mostly underground granite formation. The natural processes of weathering and erosion have created the various shapes of the boulders. KarluKarluorDevil'sMarbles - NorthernTerritory - Australia

  15. Igneous. Krishna’s Butterball is enormous; a granite, glacial erratic. Krishna'sButterball - India

  16. Sedimentary-Sandstone. The Natural Arch and Bridge Society (NABS) considers the Landscape Arch to be the longest natural arch in the world, LandscapeArch - Utah, USA

  17. Igneous-Volcanic? Tenerife is the largest and most populous island of the seven Canary Islands Los Roques - Tenerife

  18. Sedimentary-Sandstone. The Cederberg mountains are noted for dramatic rock formations and Sanrock art. Maltese Cross Rock - South Africa

  19. Sedimentary. Montserrat is a multi-peaked mountain located near the city of Barcelona, in Catalonia, Spain. The mountain is composed of strikingly pinkconglomerate. Montserrat - Catalonia

  20. Sedimentary. Mushroom Rock State Park, located in the Smoky Hills region of north-central Kansas, is noted for its mushroom rockformations. They are hoodoos formed through a process of nonuniform erosion and weathering in which a hard mass of Dakota Sandstone capstone resisted erosion while the underlying softer stone weathered away, forming a "mushroom" shape. Mushroom Rock - Kansas, USA

  21. Sedimentary. Nanya Rockwas formed through the weathering of the sandstone that lines the shore. The oxidation of iron ore within the striations of the stone has given it a beautiful striped pattern. (Cross-Bedded Sandstone) Nanya Rock - Taiwan, China

  22. Sedimentary. Palo Duro Canyon is a canyon system of the Caprock Escarpment located in the Texas Panhandle near the city of Amarillo, Texas, As the second largest canyon in the United States, it is roughly 60 mi long and has an average width of 6 mi, reaches a width of 20 mi at places. Its depth is around 820 ft , but in some locations it can increase up to 997 ft. Palo Duro Canyon - Texas, USA

  23. Sedimentary Rock. Percé Rock is part of the range of cliffs, bays and hills on the SW side of Mal Bay, which are formed of reddish-gold limestone and shale. Perce Rock - Canada

  24. Igneous-Granite. Piedra Movediza (shifting stone) was a stone located in Tandil, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Its weight was about 300 tons. It fell and broke on 29 February 1912. The rock actually slowly tettered. Piedra movediza del Tandil - Argentina

  25. Sedimentary-Limestone. The Port Campbell National Park is a protected national park in Victoria, Australia, 190 kilometres south-west of Melbourne; featuring an array of sheer cliffs overlooking offshore islets, rock stacks, gorges, arches, and blow-holes Port Campbell - Australia

  26. Igneous-Granite. Preikestolen or Prekestolen, also known by the English translations of Preacher's Pulpit or Pulpit Rock, is a steep and massive cliff 604 metres (1982 feet) above Lysefjorden, opposite the Kjeragplateau, in Forsand, Ryfylke, Norway. The top of the cliff is approximately 25 by 25 metres (82 by 82 feet), almost flat, and is a famous tourist attraction in Norway. The rock and deep fjord were molded by glaciers. Prekestolen - Norway

  27. Igneous. The Cheesewring is a natural geological formation, a rock outcrop of granite slabs formed by weathering. TheCheesewring - UK

  28. Sedimentary-Sandstone. These canyons were cut by streams with headwaters in the Chuska mountains just to the east of the monument. It is located in northeastern Arizona. Spider Rock, ChellyCanyon - Arizona, USA

  29. Sedimentary. The geological formation consists of a hard, erosion-resistant sandstone, laid down during the early Cretaceous era about 120 million years ago, near the edge of a large shallow sea that covered large parts of Northern Europe at the time. About 70 million years ago, these originally horizontal layers were folded to an almost vertical position; this was followed by various forms of weathering. TheExternsteine - Germany

  30. Igneous. The Giant's Causeway is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption. The Giant's Causeway - Northern Ireland, UK

  31. Sedimentary. “The Wave” consists of intersecting U-shaped troughs that have been eroded into Navajo Sandstone of Jurassic age. The two major troughs, which comprise this rock formation, are 62 feet (19 m) wide by 118 feet (36 m) long and 7 feet (2 m) wide by 52 feet (16 m) long. The Wave - Arizona, USA

  32. Sedimentary-Limestone. The Jurassic age limestone is about 150 million years old and was laid down in a marine corridor between the present Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. The area is karst terrain, including caves, and, many joints and faults. Torcal de Antequera - Andalusia

  33. Sedimentary. The area around the formation is home to a plethora of springs, waterholes, rock caves, and ancient paintings. The sandstone formation stands 348 m (1,142 ft) high, rising 863 m (2,831 ft) above sea level with most of its bulk lying underground, and has a total circumference of 9.4 km (5.8 mi).
