Session 2Ambulance Inventory, Oxygen and BSI Objectives: By the end of the session the student will have a basic knowledge and understanding of the following requirements: I. Have a basic knowledge of the ambulance inventory and its equipment II. Will know the procedure to change M Tank and D Size Oxygen cylinders III. Have a basic knowledge of and equipment used in Body Substance Isolation precautions
Session 2Ambulance Inventory, Oxygen and BSI Ambulance Inventory Obtain a copy of the Freightliner/Ford Wheel Coach ambulance inventory list which is used in the station, as well as county wide for all ambulances. - Read over the inventory list before reviewing the contents of the cabinets and kits. - Use the inventory list while you are physically going over the ambulance contents. - If any cabinet seals are broken, the cabinet must be re-inventoried and resealed by your preceptor. Oxygen Cylinder Replacement Your instructor will demonstrate the proper method for changing oxygen cylinders Oxygen cylinders must be replaced when the oxygen supply reached 500 Lbs in D size cylinders and 200 Lbs in M size cylinders Do not use Oil with Oxygen Cylinders Check to make sure Gaskets are in place Check for leaks after replacement
Session 2Ambulance Inventory, Oxygen and BSI Body Substance Isolation (BSI): Universal Precautions should be understood and followed by all first responders. It requires the application of blood and body fluid precautions for all patients regardless of diagnosis. Universal precautions are designed to protect health care workers from blood-borne diseases. In general, these precautions involve use of barrier devices, such as gloves, for anticipated contact with blood and certain body fluids. Gloves:Gloves must be worn for anticipated contact with blood and body fluids or contaminated items and for any contact with mucous membranes or non-intact skin. Wash hands immediately after gloves are removed. Hypo-allergenic gloves are available. Gowns: Gowns or plastic aprons are indicated if clothing is likely to be soiled with blood, body fluids or other moist body substances. White fluid-resistant gowns are available and should be worn whenever one anticipates soaking contact. Mask & Eye Protection: Masks and Eye Protection should be worn whenever aerosolization or splattering is likely to occur such as in wound irrigations, suctioning intubated patients and child birth.
