Surrealism-a 20th-century avant-garde* movement in art and literature that sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind, for example by the irrational juxtaposition of images. • *Avant-garde:(from French, "advance guard" or "vanguard", literally "fore-guard") are works that are experimental or innovative, particularly with respect to art, culture, and politics. Max Ernst, The Elephant Celebes (1921), Tate, London
Background • Sigmund Freud- neurologist who had a big interest in the work of the Surrealists. • Freud's work with free association, dream analysis, and the unconscious was of utmost importance to the Surrealists in developing methods to liberate imagination. Max Ernst, L'Ange du Foyer ou le Triomphe du Surréalisme (1937)
Vocabulary • NON-SEQUITUR-(Latin for "it does not follow"), in formal logic, is an argument in which its conclusion does not follow from its premises. In a non sequitur, the conclusion could be either true or false, but the argument is fallacious because there is a disconnection between the premise and the conclusion. • JUXTAPOSITION-the fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect."the juxtaposition of these two images"
