Deaf Community • This power point will be about the Deaf Community. It will tell about the people in it, some descriptions about their lifestyle and struggles. The Deaf Community different than the normal world. (hearing/non-fluent in ASL)
Deaf Community/culture • Culturally Deaf people in America use ASL. • They value various residential deaf schools. • (EX: Gallaudet University, Austin School for the Deaf) • In general, the “Deaf Community” consists of those Deaf and hard of hearing. But a few hearing people are also in it. • (Ex: hearing family members, friends, interpreters)
Deaf World • The deaf world refers to all “d”eaf (physically) and hard of hearing, and people • (EX: teachers of the Deaf, interpreters, parents, siblings) • They are all part of the Deaf World, but not necessarily the Deaf Community.
Disabled or not? • People of the Deaf Community do not consider themselves to be “disabled” they see themselves as a cultural group. Many do not care for hearing people. • (EX: Deaf people that do not want to be hearing, Deaf people that would choose to be Deaf over hearing)
Conclusion • The Deaf community are bonded together by a common language and experiences. They love their culture and their life. Most are very outgoing. They tell many stories about their culture with or without you asking. They are very proud of their culture and wouldn’t change anything.
