  3. Rewards and Consequences: • Rewards • Small Group: Table points • Individual: pennies (2nd semester) • Consequences

  4. Specials Schedule: • 5 day rotation • Day 1: Media • Day 2: Music • Day 3: Computers • Day 4: Art • Day 5: PE Plus, we have Guidance with Mr. Schwartz every other Friday.

  5. Daily Schedule 8:20 – 9:20 Math 9:20-10:00 Encore 10:00 Snack 10:10 –10:45 Teacher Directed Reading 10:45 –11:15 Guided Reading 11:15–12:00 Writing 12:06 12:36Lunch 12:45 –1:00 Working with Words 1:00 – 1:30 Recess 1:30 – 2:30 Science/Math extension 2:30 -2:45 Planners/Pack-up/read aloud

  6. The Literacy Program • Literacy Block: • 1. Guided Reading Working in individualized groups • 2. Phonics/ Writing Mini-Lessons/ Teacher Directed Reading • 3. Self-Selected Reading (D.I.R.T) • 4. Independent Writing • 5. Spelling

  7. Reading Program • Determine Reading Level through Running Records and Retellings (comprehension) • Teach small groups based on Instructional Reading Level • Take home reading based on Independent Reading Level

  8. How you can help with reading at home… • Take home reading – independent reading level • Make it ENJOYABLE! • Prompt for strategies (bookmark) • Put the work on the child • COMPREHENSION – authentic retelling discussion (retelling hand)

  9. Retelling Elements: • Setting • Characters (Development) • Plot and Events • Problem / Solution • Author’s Purpose • Connection

Sound it out • Before the Read • Look at the pictures before reading the story. • When your child is stuck, say: • “Look at the picture.” • “What would make sense?” (meaning) • “Does that sound right?” (grammar) • “Does that look right?” (Do the letters match • the word?) • Read it again and get your mouth ready for the • first sound.” • “Look for a chunk you know?” (groups of letters) • “Try something, and keep reading for more • information.” • “Reread the sentence.”

  11. Writing • Types of writing covered in first grade: Observational and Recount/narrative • Our writing program consists of: • Writing journal • Mini-lessons: 5-10 minutes • Rubrics are used to score writing!

How you can help with writing at home… • High frequency words (known in a few seconds- flashcards, etc.) • Authentic and engaging writing activities • Grocery list • Letters/emails • Scrap booking • Standard and Temporary Spelling • SPELLING – Word families/HF words (word wall)/individual words

  13. Math Highlighted Topics: • Number Sense • Math Facts and Math Families • Shapes • Patterns • Addition / subtraction concepts • Time (analog and digital) / Calendar language • Sort and classify objects • Graphs (bar graphs, line plots, pie charts, etc.)

  14. Math Assessments • Quarterly Written Math Tests • Performance Tasks • Teacher Observations

Level 1 – Students performing at this level do not exhibit sufficient mastery of first grade knowledge and skills successfully to complete most assignments. • Level 2 – Students performing at this level demonstrate inconsistent mastery of knowledge and skills. • Level 3 – Students at this level consistently demonstrate mastery of grade level concepts and skills. • Level 4 – Students at this level consistently perform in a manner that is clearly beyond the grade-level requirements and expectations.

  16. Homework • Take Home Reading – sign planners every night • Spelling – words will be listed in planner each week • Math homework
