climate • Due to the varying heights above sea level of the Brazil landscape as well as the proximity to the coast, the climate (and, therefore, vegetation and animal life) varies somewhat from region to region. There are five distinct climatic zones. • The Equatorial Zone- • An equatorial climate is usually one in which rainforests can be found due to the year-round humidity and precipitation. Because it is usually overcast in equatorial zones, the daily highs do not often exceed about 33 degrees Celsius, and are usually at a comfortable temperature between 25 and 28 degrees. • The Tropical Zone- • As its name implies, this climatic zone is found in the tropics. The temperatures of these zones are consistent all year round. In areas of rainforests, such as in Brazil, the average rainfall is at least 60 millimetres (or 2.4 inches) per annum. • The Semi-Arid Zone- • These zones receive less rain than they actually need to make up for evaporation, but not so much less that the area becomes a desert. They are the halfway mark between deserts and humid forests. In semi-arid zones, the vegetation includes hardy shrubs and grasses, rather than trees. • The Highland Tropical Zone- This is also called an Oceanic Climate or a Maritime Climate and is found along the coast of Brazil. It is characterised by cool summers and warm winters, although the annual temperature does not vary by significant amounts. Rainfall is fairly uniform throughout the year. To qualify as such a zone, the area must experience an annual mean temperature of not lower than 18 degrees Celsius. • The subtropical zone- • his zone refers to the areas that are just outside of the formal Tropical Zones. It is hot, but not quite as hot and humid as Tropical areas. Winters are mild to cool, but not cold enough for snow or frost.
History of brazil • Brazil, South America, has a fascinating history that extends from prehistoric times, when hunter gatherer troupes made their way through its landscapes in search of food, water and land, right up until our modern day, when its political and financial systems continue to grow and develop. • Below are some of Brazil’sMOST significant years since its discovery by European colonialists in chronological order: • 1500 - The Portuguese arrive in Brazil under the command of Pedro Alvares Cabral, who claimed this new land as his own. • 1654 – The Dutch are finally driven from Brazil by the Portuguese, who once again claim ownership. • 1750 - Portugal signs a treaty with fellow European nation Spain, which effectively fixes areas of rule in the continent of South America. • 1822 - Brazil breaks ties with Portugal, finally announcing its independence. • 1889 – Brazil proudly proclaims itself a republic. • 1942 - Brazil declares war on the Axis in the Second World War. • 1945 – Brazil becomes a member of the United Nations Organisation. • 1958 - Brazil is crowned world champions in football at the World Cup™ for the first time. • 1960 – The capital city is moved from Rio de Janeiro to the new city of Brasilia. • 1989 – Fernando Collor de Mello is elected as president in the first direct elections since 1960. • 2002 - Brazil is crowned world champions in football at the World Cup™ for the fifth time. • 2003 - Luiz Inacio Lula de Silva becomes Brazil’s president. • 2011 - DilmaRousseff becomes Brazil's first women president.
