  1. Animal Architecture

  2. Protist - Volvox Spherical Body Symmetry

  3. Body Axes • Radiate Animals • Oral – Aboral Axis • Bisection of the animal by any plane radiating from the oral-aboral axis will produce symmetrical halves • There are an infinite # of radiating planes aboral Mouth oral

  4. Body Axes • Bilateral Animals • Anterior-Posterior Axis • Dorsal-Ventral Axis • Left-Right Axis • Only bisection by a plane along anterior-posterior axis (sagittal plane) will produce symmetrical halves

  5. Protostomes vs Deuterostomes Protostomia– formation of the mouth from the first embryological opening (blastopore). Deuterostomia – formation of the anus from the blastopore.

  6. Body Cavity Types Acelomate - No cavity – internal organs imbedded in solid mass of tissue i.e. platyhelminthes

  7. Body Cavity Types Pseudocoel - Cavity without attachment to internal organs i.e. nematodes

  8. Body Cavity Types True coelom – cavity with tissue attaching viscera to body wall, i.e. protostome & deuterostome phyla
