There are three things that you need to know about me before I tell you how the classroom works. Teacher Creed
As your teacher I will not tolerate any student in this classroom stopping me from teaching for any reason whatsoever. IOW: please don’t take up my time with personal questions or get me side tracked when we have work to do
As your teacher I will not tolerate any student in this classroom stopping another student from learning for any reason whatsoever. Examples of this may include side talking, name calling and put-downs, and touching other student’s materials. These behaviors will not be tolerated in the classroom. (rule #4)
As your teacher I will not tolerate any student in this classroom doing anything that is not in your best interest or the best interest of the class. This includes coming to class tardy and coming to class unprepared. These things are not in your best interest nor are they in the best interest of the class.
I am a member of this class; there are two things you never do to me: • No manipulations -”This is too hard. I can’t do it.” -”We’ve already done this before.” -”There isn’t enough time to do this.” • Never question my management system when I am teaching. -If I say, “John, I need you to change seats.” Your response is simply, “OK.” -If I say, “Gina, I need you to open your book.” Your response is simply, “OK.” **If you have a question, see me at the end during pre-dismissal. There is no time during the class time for you to question why. Questioning the teacher in front of others is a manipulation. I will never ask you to do anything I wouldn’t do.**
Grades are determined by A-B-C-D-F Grades of D& Fare unacceptable To receive an A, B, or C: a. Be in class, on time, everyday, follow directions, are prepared and ready to learn. b. Give your best daily – be complete in your work. If these two criteria are met, the student will never get a grade lower than a C. Academic Expectations
Academic Expectations Continued Absent Work: school policy – you have one day plus the number of days absent to make up the work – find it in the folder in the back of the room – check online – see me at pre-dismissal Late Work: Assignments are to be turned in on time – late work will only be accepted by freshmen 1st semester one day late for ½ credit Class Work: to be done in class and completed in the time given Home Work: to be done outside of the school day DO NOT COPY OR CHEAT – all students involved will receive a “C grade” (for zero points)
Behavior Expectations There are five parts to the management plan. • Rules • Positives • Consequences • Severe clause • Pet Peeves
Rules 1. Follow directions – verbal & written. Directions can change, so pay attention. -entering the class -tardy to class -announcements -pre-dismissal -dismissal -my pet peeves
Rules continued: • Be in your seat before the bell. • Be prepared with required daily materials. • Respect yourself and others (keep hands, feet, & objects to yourself; use appropriate language; voice volume; scents; no manipulations; etc). • Follow all Bloom District Student Handbook rules – you are expected to know them!
Positives • Verbal • Notes • Calls • Games • Stickers • Buddy quiz • Teacher answers • Homework Pass • Drop low quiz grade • Mystery motivator
Consequences • Warning, sign log, PAC • Last out, student conference, sign log, PAC • Time after, student conference, sign log, -5 points, PAC • Above, Parental involvement, [Freshman Academy intervention], PAC • Dean’s Referral, -10 points, PAC ** PAC stands for “Parent, Administrator, Councilor”. I have the right to consult with them at any step if it’s in your best interest.**
Severe Clause • FIGHTING • VANDALISM • GANG ACTIVITY • OVERT DEFIANCE • TRUANCY • STOPPING CLASS FROM FUNCTIONING All result in an immediate dean’s referral Your deans: Mrs. Bateast (A-G), Mrs. Robustelli (H-N), Mr. Belzeski (O-Z)
Pet Peeves • ID’s & Dress code • Personal questions at wrong time • Locker sharing • Unprepared for class • Electronics (phones, mp3 players, cameras, etc) • Copying/cheating • Passes • Whining
Attendance Expectations I expect all of my students in class every day, prepared and ready to learn. If you have suspicious attendance I will investigate and refer you to your deanor Mr. Alexander (truancy officer) if necessary. When a student indicates the need to have parents involved, I expect the parents to be in my classroom and team players with me in the best interest of the student.
In & Out Log If you enter class after the bell, tardy or with a pass, there are five things you need to do: • Don’t disrupt me or other students • Sign the log – all parts • Go directly to your seat • Quietly get into the lesson • See me at pre-dismissal (if tardy)
Homework Expectations • Homework will be given when needed for additional work or preparation. The student will know how to do the homework due to the work done in class. • Class work is class work – not homework. • When I give homework, I expect it done and completed when requested. If this does not occur, I will speak to the student, and the work will be expected to be completed. If the situation occurs frequently, parents will become involved. • Take advantage of Bloom’s After School Tutoring/Homework Lab in the library 2:55-4:00
Basic Ground Rule * The first time something comes to my attention, I speak with the student.* A second occurrence, I contact the parents.
If you succeed at Bloom, you will succeed at life! What is your goal?
I want to welcome all of you to my class. I’m glad that all of you are in my class this year. I’m looking forward to this year as your teacher.
