Origins of the Term • The literal translation of otaku is “your home.” • Calling someone an otaku refers to them being at home all the time, since they prefer to read manga, play video games and watch anime instead of socializing • The term caught on at anime and manga conventions in Japan in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Attendees who did not know one another by name, but recognized each others faces would say “otaku” meaning “hey you” in greeting • In 1989 when Tsutomi Miyazaki was arrested for the abduction, mutilation and murder of four young girls, the Japanese media branded him “the otaku murderer.” This was because Miyazaki was a loner whose apartment was filled with anime, some of which was violent and pornographic.
