What is Compacting? • A procedure to streamline the grade level curriculum • STEP 1 Pre-Assessment • STEP 2 Determine Modifications • STEP 3 Alternative Learning Experiences • Diagnosis and Prescription • Can lead to Acceleration of student- but not always
How to Start • Ask these questions- • Do I have students in my class who already know the skills being covered in this quarter/year? • What measures can I use to determine mastery of concepts? • Can proficiency be documented? • Are students motivated to work independently? • If you answered yes to any of these questions- You can begin a dialogue with your principal and your REACH facilitator.
STEP 1: Pre-Assessment • Determine Pre-Assessment and Proficiency Expectation • Example- TLI quarterly pre/post • Identify students through pre-testing • Could be whole class or small group of students
STEP 2: Modify Learning Activities • Once students are identified: • Determine which concepts are already mastered and which ones they still need. You must address these concepts first before moving on in the content.- Can be through your whole group instruction. • Decide- Do students need enrichment or acceleration? • Determine a timeline for compactor • Meet with parents to explain the modifications for their child.
STEP 3: Provide Alternative Learning Experiences • Collect or create enrichment or acceleration resources • Use REACH facilitator- next grade level teacher- NOT just the next grade level text book. • Create a schedule for progress monitoring • Explain process to students • Evaluate student work and make next step plans for students

Documentation • In order for students to continue their compacting- teachers MUST have the correct documentation • Compactor Should contain… • Test scores that show strengths (Benchmark, SAT10, STAR, Teacher made tests, etc.) • Pre-Test data to determine mastery • Enrichment/Acceleration Activities/SLE’s
Assessment • Assessment on Report Cards should be on grade level skills. If a student is compacted in math- they should receive a 4 for grade-level material. • You can assess their alternative learning experiences based on the standards for the grade level at which they are working. This is important to help decide if the student should be compacted the next school year. Progress reports on the new skills can be attached to report cards for documentation and parent communication.
