  4. What we know…

  5. What we’d like to know…

  6. Accomplices

  7. Topics! • What did you select to write about and what are your three points of comparison? • For example: I am writing about the authors’ portrayal of limited personal freedom and my three points of comparison are: • (Plot) Rigid family/societal rules- traditional marriages • (Characterization) Female roles: Tita/Angela • (Characterization) Male roles: Pedro and Pablo Vicario versus Santiago Nasar

  8. Another Example: Structure Chronicle… • Non-linear plot • Warped timeline (not chronological) • 1st person narration • Omniscient point of view • Chapter breaks- 5 times through the story Like Water… • Non-linear plot (past, present & future woven together) • Semi-chronological over course of book • Starts with 1st person • Follows Tita through 3rd person • Recipes • Chapters- months, but not consecutive in a year.

  9. And another… • Topic: Violence and Brutality • Diction (Word choice used) • Different and similar in each novel • Characterization: Mama Elena and Angela’s Mother • Similar female mother archetypes • Setting: A time of war/revolution; no historical backdrop setting (adds to mystery) • Different settings

  10. In pairs • Find someone who has a similar topic as you. • Work together to complete the chart. • Use ALL your resources. • You will use this page to create your outline, for homework. • Include page numbers for supporting passages.

  11. Themes in Chronicle… & Like Water for Chocolate • Personal freedom (& lack of…), Fate, Predestination vs. Free will • Contradictions, ambiguity, deception, memory, unreliability, illusion, secrecy • Cultural traditions, moral & social order, honor, social pressures • Violence and Brutality • Gender Roles as prescribed by society (female or male) • Religion and spirituality

  12. Also… • Unanswered questions • Juxtaposition of major and minor details • Unreliability of memory • Motifs: birds! • Time and numbers • Imagery, literary devices, characterization of Latin American Literature ………. And many more!!!

  13. Structuring your Essay/Outline 1. Block 2. Point by point • You will need to select one model to use; both work well!

  16. Block Method: Magical Realism Like Water for Chocolate 1st standard of comparison: dreams 2nd standard of comparison: hyperbole 3rd standard of comparison: use of time Chronicles of a Death Foretold 1st standard of comparison: dreams 2nd standard of comparison: hyperbole 3rd standard of comparison: use of time

  17. Structuring your Essay/Outline(example: personal freedom) 1. ”Block” Intro Like Water for Chocolate rigid family/social rules characterization of women characterization of men Chronicle of a Death Foretold rigid family/social rules characterization of women characterization of men Conclusion

  18. Structuring your Essay/Outline 2. “Point-by-point” Intro Rigid Family/Social Rules Chronicle of a Death Foretold examples Like Water for Chocolate examples Characterization of Women Chronicle of a Death Foretold examples Like Water for Chocolate examples Characterization of Men Chronicle of a Death Foretold examples Like Water for Chocolate examples Conclusion

  19. Both authors address the theme of limited personal freedom, but they do it in different ways. • Points of comparison: 1. Both are set within restrictive family and social settings. • Example from Chronicle • Example from LWFC 2. Both portray female characters who are forced into situations against their will. • Tita/Angela- arranged marriages 3. GGM includes male characters who are forced into situations against their will, while Esquivel keeps the focus on female characters. • Pedro & Pablo Vicario, Santiago Nasar • Tita, Rosaura, Mama Elena, Nacha, etc.

  20. So what???? • What has this comparison showed us about the ways in which personal freedom can be affected by one’s environment? • What about YOUR “So What?”- what might you conclude? What are your overall BIG findings?

  21. New topic- Imagery • Imagery • Chronicle: ghostly, surreal, dreamlike • LWFC: food-related, sensual (all senses), temperature (hot/cold) • So What? Imagery is a powerful conduit to mirror both the tone and the mood of writing. While Marquez’ imagery portrays a grotesque setting shrouded in dreams, confusion, and ominous omens, Esquivel’s imagery mirrors the tone of her characters. Her imagery often evokes a direct experience with the character’s emotions.

  22. Homework • Be prepared to write your compare-contrast essay IN CLASS • Bring: • Both books • Your COMPLETED OUTLINE • USE YOUR PACKET!!!! • Character Relationship Chart due Monday
