Myths About The Bible All You Need Is Love
Bible Teaching Of Love • AGAPAO • In KJV as “charity” (esp. 1 Cor. 13) • This kind of love is unnatural to man • A love that is learned & is commanded • Given without expectation (Jn. 3:16) • Denotes & demands total commitment • No conditions, no strings • Not emotional love
PHILEO • More nearly tender affection • Never used toward God • Usually something in return • This is emotional love • These are both oft used words • Agapao is used in 1 John 4:8-12 • Phileo is used in 1 Corinthians 16:22
Importance Of Love • Love is an important concept & the central point of the NT (1 Cor. 13:13) • It is part of the explanation Jesus gave on the “greatest commandment” (Matt. 22:37-40) • Different attitudes exhibited in New Testament (Matt. 5:43-46) • Important for Christians to exhibit love for one another (Jn. 13:34-35)
The Place Of Love And Obeying The Lord • As with other subjects studied previously in this series, some attempt to pit love versus obedience • This is a false dichotomy • They are not mutually opposed • Obedience is the product or manifestation of love
What Jesus said (Jn. 14:15) • Jesus has no problem making a connection between love & obedience • This implies that the one who does not keep the commandments does so because he/she does not love Jesus • It is impossible to say “I love Jesus” and not keep his commandments • This is recognized by Christ in Luke 6:46 • His commandments are expected to be obeyed by His disciples (Matt. 28:19-20)
John writes, “For this is the love of God, that we keep His command-ments. And His commandments are not burdensome” (1 Jn. 5:3) • Here we again see that keeping the commandments is not love, but a manifestation of love • This coincides with what is said in Matthew 11:28-30
