  3. Background • Several attempts to create Fab Foundation • 2008 restart • 2009: Decided that international network of foundations would be created, and loosely confederated

Needs • Fab Lab network growing, doubling • Logistics to bring new labs on-line • Growing demands of Fab conferences • Exchange info • About Labs • About projects and research • Funding • Help current/proposed Fab Labs secure funding • Coordinate funding applications that span multiple locations

Opportunities • Education • Fab Academy coming on-line • Open courseware from third parties • Leveraging growing Fab Network • Multi-lab projects • One to one mentoring • Outreach to like-minded initiatives • Industrial arts programs • Regional government programs • Maker Faire type events • Urban hackerspaces

  6. 2009 Update • U.S. non-profit. Incorporated 2009 • Tax exempt status applied for • Actively seeking funding

  7. Goals • Offload logistics stress at MIT • Maximize the potential of the global network • Create social network - most likely a Wiki - that encourages user participation • Engage with large foundations • Connect with broader ‘hands-on’ ecosytem • Interact with international Fab Foundations confederation
