Teen Dating Facts What is POWER? 1 out of 5 teens will be in a serious relationship have been slapped, hit, or pushed by their partner. 2009, more than 110,000 students between the ages of 18 & 24 were victims of alcohol-related sexual assault or date rape. 23% of teens report having been threatened with physical harm either to them or self-inflicted by their partner – to avoid breakup 1 in 4 Teens start to date by 14 1 in 3 Teens said they have to tell their BF/GF where they are going.

Types of Abuse Physical – Pushing, Kicking, Slapped, Restricted, choked, Hair Grabbing, Hitting, Use of any weapon etc. Emotional/Verbal - Yelling, Disrespect, Insults, Power, Name Calling, Blaming, Mind Games Sexual Abuse – Unwanted Sexual Contact, Rape, Grabbing Body Parts Activity- Where do you draw the line?
Abusive Relationships Characterized by jealousy, sexual coercion, infidelity, power plays, broken promises Abuse does not have to be physical. Get worse over time if the cycle is not broken. Addicts and Alcoholics can create an abusive relationship climate. Abuser are often survivor’s themselves Repeat throughout generations Do not change without help or therapy.
If you are being abused you might ……. Believe that it is your fault Feel angry, sad, lonely depressed or confused. Feel helpless to stop the abuse. Feel anxious, trapped, or lonely. Feel afraid of getting hurt
If Someone You Know is Being Abused You Can….. Encourage your friend to seek help Find someone to talk to about your feelings Listen to your friend! Talk to an adult Do not confront the ABUSER! Call Dating Violence Hotline (1-800-799-safe) Helpline

Arrange the date (go somewhere public or group date) Alternate plan and a ride home if things go wrong Know your boundaries early. ON THE DATE – Don’t Drink or do drugs State your boundaries Watch your body language Be aware of the situation
