The Christian and the World • PREACH GOSPEL TO THE WORLD (mankind) • Gospel is for the lost,Rom. 1:16 • Preaching the gospel is how God saves the lost,1 Cor. 1:21 • We must be ready, willing, able to preach,Rom. 10:13-15; 1 Ths. 1:8 • Preach Christ & not ourselves, 2 Cor. 4:3-6; 1 Cor. 2:2; Gal. 1:10 6

The Christian and the World • LIGHT OF THE WORLD (of sin), Matt. 5:14-16; Phil. 2:15-16 • World is in darkness,Eph. 4:17-19; 5:7-8 • Called into light,1 Pet. 2:9; Jno. 8:12 • We are to be lights that: • Show the good works of God, 2 Tim. 3:17 • Show the way to God, 1 Pet. 2:12 • Show honor for God, Jas. 4:4 7

The Christian and the World • DO NOT CONFORM TO THE WORLD (of evil),Jno. 17:15; Rom. 12:2 • Not to shape ourselves after the world • Conform ourselves to the image of the Son,Lk. 6:40; Rom. 8:29 • Christians are losing our identity and distinctive nature!2 Cor. 6:16-7:1; 2 Tim. 2:19-22 (1 Pet. 4:1-4) 8

  11. The Christian and the World • DO NOT BEFRIEND THE WORLD (the enemy), James 4:4; 1:27 • Friend: A term of companionship, endearment; he who associates familiarly with one • Purity, not defilement,Phil. 4:8-9 • Be a friend of Jesus, not of the world, Jno. 15:14 (Matt. 12:50) 11

  12. The Christian and the World • EXPECT OPPOSITION FROM THE WORLD, Lk. 6:24-26; 2 Tim. 3:10-12 • “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you… 12

If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me.”(Jno. 15:18-21; cf. 16:1-4, 8-13, 33) 13
