Klingner The University of Texas at Austin Objectives ■Study in-elastic behavior of low-rise reinforced concrete masonry structures with clay masonry veneer under seismic loading ■Propose refinements to reinforced concrete masonry structures with clay masonry veneer, oriented toward performance - based design Analytical work ■ Development of general, analytical models ( shown below ) of reinforced concrete masonry structures implemented on FEM - based software, OpenSees roof diaphragm CMU, out - of - plane CMU, in - plane Experimental work connectors, in - plane connectors, out - of - plane ■ Quasi - static tests on reinforced concrete masonry walls with clay masonry veneer, in - plane and out - of - plane veneer, in - plane veneer, out - of - plane A rotational restraint ( B = A) B inelastic rotational spring elasto - plastic springs for sliding ■Parameter study to evaluate the effects of the characteristics of structural elements ( connectors, in-plane and out-of-plane walls, roof diaphragms, etc. ) on the response of the entire structure under seismic loading out - of - plane in - plane ■ Shaking - table test of a full - scale, one - story reinforced concrete masonry building with clay masonry veneer Important points to date ■ Low - rise reinforced concrete masonry buildings with clay masonry veneer ( meeting MSJC Code and Specification for SDC D ) resist earthquakes above MCE without collapse ■ Seismic response of buildings and veneer is generally consistent with performance expectations ■ Seismic response is well predicted by nonlinear dynamic analysis and static design tools (conducted at the NEES shaking-table at UCSD)
