Contents • Background and objectives RETRACK • RETRACK project structure and activities • WP 12: Knowledge Base • Work planning
Policy background • Strong rail freight market crucial for socio-economic and environmental targets, within the EU and between the EU and surrounding countries • European transport policy based on level playing field and fair competition • Two decades of liberalisation in rail freight: • Emergence of new rail private operators • From marginal to major players • Incumbents fight back: mergers and acquisitions • Concrete actions to support this EU policy: develop and demonstrate new rail freight services with private operators on selected corridors
Corridor development ERTMS Corridors planned TEN-T/ERTMS Corridors A-F

WP 12 Objectives • The RETRACK Knowledge Base shall contribute to: • Improve the quality of infrastructure modelling in the field of capacity and infrastructure management • Development of business models with integration of different transport modes and collaboration strategies • Establishment of a web-based platform for monitoring and development of trans-European rail freight corridors • Improvement of the rail freight market opening by providing transparent monitoring of market and framework conditions • Generic approach for various corridors in combination with ETIS+ leads to substantial information tool
Knowledge Base elements • Web portal and contents management system • A public and a restricted document repository and search system • Table data: data viewer with tables, maps and charts and data editor • Geo data: network data viewer with infrastructure and topology • Survey system to define, conduct and visualise online surveys • Support data exchange with external systems as TENTec, Gisco, TRANSTOOLS, ETIS+
Knowledge Base target group • EC Policy makers and agencies, amongst others: • DG Move • TEN – TEA • ERRAC • Rail freight Corridor managers • National policy makers • National infrastructure managers • Commercial rail operators • Branche organisations, a/o UIRR, UIC, Xrail, CER, ESC • Individual customers, 3PLP’s, shippers • Others, a/o R&D institutes, consultants, interest groups
