The Big Ask • On the 25th May 2005, the Big Ask campaign was launched. Radiohead front man Thom Yorke leads the campaign. • Friends of the Earth called press conferences, starts petitions and got publicity from Thom Yorke. • It was trying to enforce a Bill which will reduce carbon emissions by 80% by 2050.
New coalition – 13 July 2005 • Friends of the Earth launch a new coalition; an alliance for combined effort towards a new climate law. • The coalition is called ‘Stop Climate Chaos’, and it calls for a new climate law with annual carbon dioxide cuts.
The Big Ask live – 1 May 2006 • Radiohead’s Thom Yorke headlines the Big Ask live concert. • This was one of a series of gigs in support of the campaign. • It was attended by David Miliband who later became Secretary of State for the environment.
David Cameron – 1 September 2006 • David Cameron added his support to the campaign. • He called for a climate change Bill to be included in the Queen’s next speech. • The conservatives publish their own Climate Change bill.
15 September 2006 • A month of lobbying by constituents is carried out. • Lobbying is when a group of people seek to influence politicians or public officials on a specific issue. • 620 out of 646 MPs have been asked to support the campaign for a strong climate change law.
Hints of new climate law12 October 2006 • David Miliband indicates that the Government will introduce legislation to tackle climate change. • 412 out of 646 MPs have signed a petition (Early Day Motion 178) • Only 3 other Early Day Motions have ever been signed by over 400 MPs.
New climate law announced15 November 2006 • The government announces in the Queen’s speech that it will introduce a new Climate Change law.
The Big Ask online – 4 July 2007 • The Big Ask online march is launched. • People use this website to lobby their MP by video message. • The march is supported by Jude Law, James Blunt and Razorlight’s Johnny Borrell
Europe’s Big Ask - 27 Feb 2008 • The Big Ask launches in 17 different countries across Europe. • It’s calling on Governments to cut carbon dioxide emissions every year.
Razorlight – 27 May 2008 • Razorlight play to highlight aviation and shipping. • They play in front of a Jet at the science museum. • A cross party group of MPs form a band called the Aviators and play in support.
