What I did: • Made my brother make two shots with a basketball into a hoop • One with a normal 46 degree angle • One with an increased angle of 59 degrees • Both shots make a perfect parabola due to the way gravity pulls on the ball
What should have happened: • The ball shot with the increased angle should have had a bigger initial velocity in order to make it all the way to the hoop • Since an increased angle would mean throwing the ball higher, it would have to be thrown faster in order to cover the same amount of distance • The value of gravity should have been reasonably close to the actual value of -9.81 m/s^2
What happened: • The velocity of the ball shot at the 59 degree angle was half of the one shot at the 46 degree angle • I blame my brother… • The acceleration due to gravity was relatively close to the actual value which is why this created a parabola • any object in free-fall creates a perfect parabola in the air
