SIGARCH Viability Review Norm Jouppi SIGARCH Chair October 2006
Financials • Current fund balance approximately $2M • Up from $1.5M in 2002 • But $932K now required vs. $488K in 2002 • Discretionary$/Member roughly flat • $670 in 2002 vs. $738 in 2006 • Problem: We used to solely sponsor many conference student travel grants • Industry likes contributing for this instead • New proposal: endow SC fellowships $100K
Membership & Volunteer Development • Relatively stable membership • >80% retention in 2006 • Current membership of 1428 • Decline from 1515 in 2002 • Membership fees flat for many years • Plenty of opportunities to serve in conference organization • Somewhat stale board (1 new member 2002) • Plan to reinvigorate in next election • Use board as input of funnel instead of output
Conferences • 50-100% sponsorship • ISCA, ASPLOS, SCXY, ICS, SPAA • 10-50% sponsorship • PACT, ANCS, CCGrid, SENSYS, HiPC • In cooperation: 5 conferences • Moving ASPLOS to annual conference • Many overlapping architecture conferences • More than 1 a month on average • Trying to get some to collocate • SIGARCH, SIGMICRO, IEEE TCCA sponsors • Herding cats
Publications • SIGARCH Computer Architecture News • 4 regular issues • Most have special sections on workshop proceedings • Special issues: ISCA and ASPLOS proceedings • Publications plus program • Proceedings of SC, ICS, SPAA • SIGARCH News email ~2X month
Other Member Benefits • Awards sponsored: • Eckert-Mauchly • Maurice Wilkes • ISCA Influential Paper • ISCA compendium DVD (2003)
