Race to the Top The Board of Regents will review recommendations of: • ELA and Mathematics additions, including PreK-3 • College and Career Readiness Work Group revisions of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) • Revised draft of NYS Teaching Standards • Training plans for Annual Professional Performance Reviews (APPR)

  4. Race to the Top, Collaboration with other Sections • New assessments will provide data for the P-20 longitudinal data system to identify whether students are on track and help teachers improve instruction and school climate. • Provide input on the redesigned teacher and school leader preparation programs and the comprehensive teacher and principal evaluation system. • Provide support for innovative school models including schools and programs for over-age and under-credited students, STEM schools, etc.

  5. Common Core State Standards (CCSS) • Adoption of Common Core State Standards: current update and next steps for recommended 15% • Overview of CCSS for Mathematics and CCSS for ELA: main highlights for each • Summary of S/CDN feedback from the June meeting on necessary resources • Timeline for Common Core implementation and table discussions

Limited English Proficient / English Language Learners (LEP/ELLs) RTTT goals for LEP/ELLs: • Funds used on the implementation of the Seven Essential Elements in high need districts. • Funds support: • Preparation and certification of bilingual and ESL staff • LEP/ELL parent empowerment • Capacity building at the school and district levels • Provision of equitable services for LEP/ELLs • RFP will be released for Regional Bilingual Education/Resource Network to start July 2011

  7. Early Education and Reading Initiatives RTTT Invitational Priority # 3 Goals: • Finalize world class prekindergarten standards • Develop early childhood assessment system • Incorporate early childhood assessment protocols into P-12 data system • Develop regional technical assistance center

  8. College and Career Readiness The Regents College and Career Readiness Work Group have discussed revisions to the following: • High school Diploma requirements • High School Assessments • General Educational Development (GED) policy and programs

  9. Annual Professional Performance Reviews (APPR) • APPR regulations are being revised to reflect recommendations of the Regents Task Force on Teacher and Principal Effectiveness. • The current time line:

  10. Regulation changes • Amendments to Commissioner Regulations to eliminate the: • Second Language Proficiency Examination (SLP); • Regents comprehensive examinations in Hebrew, Latin and German; • Grades five and eight Social Studies assessments.
