Terminology • Dual: Flight time with an instructor • Solo: Flight time by yourself • PIC: Pilot in command • VFR: Visual Flight Rules • VMC: Visual Metrological Conditions • IFR: Instrument Flight Rules • IMC: Instrument Metrological Conditions • FB0: Fixed Base Operator (gas station) • GA: General Aviation (all aviation except military & air line)
Requirements for a pilot’s license • 17 years old (16 for student pilot) (Glider: 16 and 14) • Read and speak English • Prove US citizenship or meet non citizen requirements • Complete ground instruction or self study • Pass written test • Pass medical exam (except Sport and Recreational) • 40 hours minimum flight training (Sport: 20 Recreational: 30) • Pass an oral and flight test
What you can do with a Private Pilot airplane License • Fly any single engine, fixed gear, fixed pitch, under 200 hp airplane (any aircraft with more training) • Fly day or night under visual flight rules (VFR) • Fly for pleasure or business incidental to your being a pilot • Fly almost anywhere in the world • Operate in 4 dimensions • Impress all your friends (well…)

Airline Pilot Eligibility } $15,000 - $25,000, 1 – 2 years • Commercial pilot license • Instrument rating • Multi engine rating • 1,500 total flight hours • Second class medical certificate • No felonies, recent DUIs and misdemeanors • Recommended: • Associates degree or better (any field of study) • Good credit • First class medical certificate • Multi engine Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) or flight engineer’s license • 3,000 total flight hours, 1,500 multi engine hours
Airline Pilot Pay & Benefits Regional airlines: • $20,000 to $95,000 per year • Usually no benefits for starting pilots Major airlines: • $30,000 to $275,000 per year • Full benefits including medical and retirement • Per diem international flight ~$2.50-$3.00 / hour • Significant travel discounts
