Essential Question: In the face of adversity, what causes some individuals to prevail while others fail?
BELL RINGER/VOCABULARY REVIEW • You will be assigned a partner. • You and your partner will be sitting back to back and quizzing each other on the vocabulary terms. • One person will call out each word to his/her partner, and they will provide the definition. • If they need help remembering the definition, the partner calling out the words will have to coach their partner and give them hints to help them.
Write these questions in your journal • In the face of adversity, what causes some individuals to prevail while others fail? • What makes an experience extraordinary? 3. What happens when the extraordinary touches our ordinary lives?
Answer the questions in your journal • Make sure you support your answer with at least one specific example. Use complete sentences.

Cliché: an expression that has been used so often that it has become common and sometimes boring. Examples: Opposites attract. You are what you eat. 10. Personification: A figure of speech in which human characteristics are given to an animal or an object. Example: My teddy bear gave me a hug.
