Funding Education in Michigan Is the Michigan lottery worth the gamble?
Introduction • How much money is going toward public education? • How much of this money is coming from the Michigan Lottery?
The State Budget The State Budget • Our state budget for fiscal year 2004 is 39 billion dollars • How much of this 39 billion goes toward education in Michigan?
Jon-O • You’ve all heard of Keno, now lets play Jon-O • The game is going to help show how the state budget is dispersed
How much is 39% ? • The total education spending for 2004 comes to 12.4 billion • 11.2 billion comes from the state budget • 1.2 billion is federally funded
How much of the Education fund comes from the lottery? • Five % of this 11.2 billion dollars comes from lottery • Five % equals 613.5 million dollars • This is out of a total of 1.726 billion, or about 35% • This was second on lottery revenue distribution only to payout to winners • The lottery increases it’s contribution almost every year, last year it was a 4.5% increase
Is the lottery a good source of money for education? • The Michigan lottery was implemented in 1973 • It was decided at the time of its introductory to supply money from its revenues to Michigan Education • However, at the same time, other avenues of support for Michigan education were closed, canceling its affects
The Future • Michigan’s top priority is Education • Since 1990, investment in education has grown over $7 billion, a 90% increase! • Governor Granholm wants to increase the Education spending to over 14 billion
