E N D
Allegory An allegory is when a storyteller tells a story about one thing (e.g. the wolf in Canto I) but the storyteller is also telling a story about something else (e.g. the wolf represented the papacy/Pope). In Dante’s case, he is telling the story of his trip through Hell but he is ALSO telling a story about the Emperor, the Pope, the Catholic Church, the political parties in Florence, how Florence should react to the political climate, etc. Therefore, “Dante’s Inferno” is a political allegory.
Dark Woods of Error Summary • Dante wakes up and finds himself in a very dark place. He notes that he has somehow lost his way. He sees a light on the hilly horizon but he is prevented from going there by 3 beasts—a leopard (Florence), a lion (King of France), and a wolf (Rome/papacy). Virgil offers to lead him to the light but he must first pass through the circles of hell. Dante is fearful but decides to trust Virgil.
