#3 – Thomas Jefferson • 1757: At age 14 he inherited from his father 5,000 acres of land in Virginia. The estate was known as Monticello. • Attended the College of William and Mary • 1762: graduated from college.
1767: began to practice law. (lawyer) • 1769 – 1779: served in the Virginia legislature. • 1772: married Martha Skelton • 1775-1776: member of the Continental Congress. • 1776: drafted and signed the Declaration of Independence.

House of Representatives breaks the tie. They choose Jefferson as the next President. • 1804: 12th amendment: is added to the Constitution. President and Vice President must be placed on the same political party ticket for elections.
