Why Add Lexiles? • Due to the accountability requirements of NCLB, many states are turning to standardized systems for reading which help to track student progress. • States and districts throughout the U.S.—including California, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, North Carolina, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming—have adopted the Lexile Framework as a critical part of the reading curriculum. How does it Work? • Lexile measures are based on two well-established predictors of how difficult a text is to comprehend: semantic difficulty (word frequency) and syntactic complexity (sentence length). SIRS Discoverer • Why use two separate reading levels? • SIRS Editorially assigned reading levels take into account subject matter, depth of coverage and Flesch Reading Ease scale. • Lexile Scores provide a formalized measurement by which students and teachers can track their reading progress one of the necessary requirements for NCLB funding. Discoverer Advanced Search • Advanced Search allows students to sort results by relevance, date or Lexile score in descending or ascending order. Additionally, students may limit results to a particular Lexile range. Use the descending order option to return the highest Lexile scores first.
