E N D
What is service learning? Service learning is a credit-bearing, educational experience in which students: 1) participate in an organized service activity that meets identified on- and off-campus community needs and 2) reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility http://www2.byui.edu/ServiceLearning/subpages/fgdefinition.htm
Benefits of Service Learning • Enriches student learning of course material and "brings books to life and life to books". • Engages students in active learning that demonstrates the relevance and importance of academic work for their life experience and career choices. • Increases awareness of current societal issues as they relate to academic areas of interest. • Broadens perspectives of diversity issues and enhances critical thinking skills. • Improves interpersonal skills that are increasingly viewed as important skills in achieving success in professional and personal spheres. • Develops civic responsibility through active community involvement. http://emedia.leeward.hawaii.edu/servicelearning/benefits.htm
What I got out of Service Learning I got a lot out of Service Learning this past year. It helped me realize and to appreciate all of the things that I have been pleased with in my life. The amount of people that aren’t as fortunate as us, is incredible and makes you think about how pleased we really are.
Alpha Delta Pi Charity Softball Tournament • I Participated in a Charity softball tournament this past Spring before the event would eventually be rained out. All of the proceeds were still donated toward the charity of AD Pi’s choice.
KD Red Cross Blood Drive • I am a regular blood donor, but this past month, for the first time did a double red blood cell donation. In this type of donation, your blood is pumped into a machine that spins your blood and separates your RBC from the rest of your blood contents then pump the rest of your blood contents back into your arm.
The picture below shows the machine that is used to do a Double Red Blood Cell donation.
The Valdosta State Tennis team held a fund raiser by selling Tennis shirts. I purchased several shirts and re-sold them to several of my friends helping to raise money for the VSU tennis team. I also purchased a shirt to help out the cause for the Blazer squad.
Below are two of the shirts that I sold helping the Valdosta Blazer tennis teams
