An Overview of the Phonics Phases Phase 1: Environmental sound recognition, listening and oral work Phase 2: Introduction of each individual phoneme (sound), blending and segmenting these sounds, tricky words (ones that don’t follow a phonetic pattern, e.g. was and said), high frequency words Phase 3: Blending and segmenting sets of graphemes – reading and writing, higher level tricky wordsand high frequency words Phase 4: Consolidation of sounds, adjacent consonants (jump) & poly-syllabic words (lunchbox). tricky words, high frequency words Phase 5: Introduction of additional phonemes (digraphs, trigraphs) and alternative spellings. The Phonics Screening Check • In June, children will be assessed for their phonics knowledge • Statutory screening to highlight where children may be finding decoding a challenge • This is not a reading test and is very child friendly. • If your child does not reach the expected standard, they will have additional support during Year 2 and re-take the test in Year 2.
