Timeline of Exploring Health Organization • August 2012: The concept considered at the Dean’s Retreat in a discussion focused on “how we can be more efficient and effective in how we are structured and organized in Academic Affairs in order to respond effectively to future trends and the growing need for accountability and efficiency.” • November 2012: Began discussions of the concept with Faculty Senate Executive Committee leaders (Chair Peter Larsen and Vice Chair David Byrd) • November 2012: Concept paper submitted to newly formed Administrative and Management Review Committee (AMRC) to oversee the exploration of how health units at URI might be better organized by examining “potential opportunities to align our human, physical and financial resources associated with ‘health’ into a single sub-division, school, college or other entity.”
Timeline of Exploring Health Organization (cont.) • December 2012: The Academic Subcommittee of the AMRC assigned Deb Riebe to liaison with faculty committee to explore the concept (the Health Exploration Committee, chaired by Prof. Ruby Dholakia, with 13 faculty from PHM, NUR, NFS, HDF, CMD, KIN, PT, PSY, BUS). • February 2013-July 2013: The Health Exploration Committee explored options for reorganization and produced their recommendations in July 2013. • Fall 2013: The Provost met with URI health departments and colleges to obtain feedback on the Health Exploration Committee’s recommendations. • February 2014: A new faculty committee was formed, the Phase II Health Planning Committee, to develop a proposal for a reorganization of the health units. Co-chaired by Vice Provost Beauvais and Prof. Deb Riebe, the committee included 11 faculty and one dean representing the health departments and colleges at URI.
Timeline of Exploring Health Organization (cont.) • May 1, 2014: URI Health Summit was held: “Framing the Opportunities in Health Education, Research, and Outreach.” • October 10, 2014: A meeting with external constituents of health programs at URI (i.e., donors, alumni, government and community health officials and agents) was held to obtain feedback on the Phase II Committee’s reorganization ideas. • October 31, 2014: the Phase II Committee’s recommendations for creating the Academic Health Collaborative at URI were distributed to the campus community. • November 18, 2014: URI Public forum is held to obtain feedback on the Phase II Committee’s recommendations.
Timeline of Exploring Health Organization (cont.) • November-January 2015: Phase II Health Committee considers feedback and makes final recommendations in report • February-March 2015: Departments and colleges vote on whether to join the Academic Health Collaborative (proposed vision and structure) • March 23, 2015: University’s Curricular Affairs Committee voted to approve the reorganization into the Academic Health Collaborative
Vision of the Academic Health Collaborative The URI Academic Health Collaborative is dedicated to cross-cutting innovation in broad aspects of health-related education, research, and community engagement with a focus on interprofessional education, population health, health promotion, and recognition and elimination of health disparities. The work of the Academic Health Collaborative includes preparation of contemporary health literate citizens and health care providers and individuals prepared to contribute to new kinds of health organizations and workforce opportunities, including promoting health in our own community and state.

Implementation • Estimated integration in Fall 2016 • Dean searches in the AHC colleges will begin • Search for director of the Institute for Integrated Health will begin • Department of Textiles, Fashion Merchandising, and Design is in discussion with the College of Business to join that college • School of Education and College of Continuing Education are working on potential merger
