  2. About the United Way • The United Way fights for the health, education, and financial stability of every person in our community. We are able to achieve this through our partner agencies and direct programs.

  3. Columbus Area United Way Goals for HEALTH: • Increase the number of community members educated on healthier lifestyle choices. • 2) Decrease suicide attempts by youth

  4. United Way partner strategies to achieve the Health goals… • Educate the community about • Mental Health • Domestic Violence prevention • How Social Media causes social isolation • The effects of substance abuse • Diet and exercise • Identify when lack of health insurance or high deductibles can deter people from getting help. • Prevention is the key as the United Way works to break the cycle of negative behaviors.

  5. The Columbus Area United Way EDUCATION Goals: Improve Kindergarten Readiness Improve and maintain community public school 4-year graduation rate

United Way partner strategies to achieve the Education goals… • Focus on the early years of a child’s education, birth to 8 years old. • Elementary and High School years, focus on: • Expanded learning opportunities • Before and after school programs • Attendance • Parents stay engaged • Fostering hope for a successful future

  7. The Columbus Area United Way FINANCIAL STABILITY Goal: • 1) Adults improve job relevant skills • United Way partner strategies to achieve the Financial Stability goal: • Basic Needs of food and shelter are met • Develop life skills • Improve employment • Connect people to resources

  8. Partner Agencies Partner agencies work with United Way and receive funding based on an application and volunteer-led grant process. Direct Programs Program administered directly by United Way staff and volunteers The Imagination Library • Mails books to children from birth through 4 years of age every month to encourage early reading and family connections. • Must have a parent or guardian that either lives or works in Columbus, works at Cargill – Schuyler or Sentinel Buildings in Albion. Kindergarten Readiness Camp • Focused on helping children entering Kindergarten develop the social/emotional skills needed when starting school. • Open to all children in Columbus and surrounding area • Children who have not attended preschool, have limited exposure to a school setting, or need to build their confidence in a group setting are encouraged to register. 2-1-1 • Free, multilingual, confidential service available by dialing 2-1-1. • Helps individuals locate community-based and government agencies for services. Bridges Out Of Poverty • Four hour workshop the United Way provides to the community. • Gives insight on the differences between our basic economic classes; • It provides community organizations, employers, social service agencies and educators an understanding of the issues and strategies related to reducing poverty. The United Way Directory of Services • Tool for community members and service providers to find detailed information on local health and human service agencies. • Located on www.columbusunitedway.comand available in print. • Over 350 programs listed as well as hotlines that address a variety of issues.
